Moorish...but not more-ish

Moorish: 11 West Street, Ashburton, Devon TQ13 7DT
Price: £5
Components: (Allegedly) Egg, mushroom, tomato, saute potato, toast.
Our star rating: *

I'm beginning to think that Ashburton might be a vegetarian breakfast blackspot. Having had a less than satisfactory one there before, I was looking for somewhere different. Moorish's menu held some promise: a nice round £5 for a breakfast and big wooden tables with plenty of space. Looking at the menu, it oddly said "Vegetarian breakfast with", so I endeavoured to find out what the breakfast was in fact 'with'. This is always a little bit of an issue, because Cai doesn't like mushrooms or tomato so when we eat out the ability and willingness to accommodate this is one of our criteria.
"Sausages." the waitress told me. I waited for more. She looked bewildered. "...Without meat."
"And what else?" I prompted.
"What was it you were wanting?" she asked, slightly frustrated and apparently oblivious to what seems to me to be quite a normal request to know what I was ordering before I ordered it. I explained that Cai doesn't like mushrooms and tomatoes. She went off to the kitchen to check, then came back and told us that there weren't in fact any sausages after all, and that the rest of the breakfast was mushroom, tomato, egg, saute potatoes and toast. So basically Cai would have had egg and potatoes and toast. No beans, no sausages. That seemed a bit meagre so we packed up and left.

Maybe we shouldn't have expected baked beans - it is a mediterranean restaurant after all - but given that they serve what is ostensibly a 'full English' breakfast, it's not wholly unreasonable to expect them. But what did it for me was the incomprehension of the waitress that we were asking about our food and that she actually seemed displeased to be asked. We are interested in food. They are a restaurant. You'd think we might have something in common. It is even possible for restaurants to go that extra mile, to offer alternatives, to reassure customers they can be looked after - and although many don't, some do. And guess which ones we like best!
